The Joan Leach Memorial Lecture
A Gaskell Gallery: a comprehensive survey of portraits of Elizabeth and William Gaskell
We’re delighted to welcome Anthony Burton, who’ll deliver the Joan Leach Memorial Lecture at our Autumn meeting.
Some eminent Victorians were recorded in hundreds of portraits. Not so the Gaskells. But their portraits make an interesting range, in various media, occasioned by different circumstances; and repay close investigation. William earned several ‘official’ portraits in oils, but also many casual snapshots by a photographer friend. Elizabeth was depicted at all stages of her life, from bright young thing to mellow matron; and the talk looks also at modern attempts to polish her image.
One of our most popular speakers, Anthony Burton was, until recently, a member of the Gaskell Society committee. He is also a volunteer and former Trustee at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. His working life was chiefly spent as a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (1968-2002). After retirement, he taught for ten years on a museum studies course at Kingston University. He was a Trustee of the Charles Dickens Museum, London (1978-2005). His publications have mainly concerned the visual and literary culture of the nineteenth century. He is the joint author (with Diane Duffy) of Christmas with the Gaskells.
