The Life of Charlotte Brontë – a manuscript workshop

Thursday 29 April, 2021, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm BST

£6

An introductory workshop to the manuscript of The Life of Charlotte Brontë hosted by Dr Lucy Hanks. Attendees will learn about how the biography was written and edited by Elizabeth Gaskell and her husband William. The workshop will be interactive, giving participants the opportunity to read and transcribe controversial portions of the manuscript – such as material relating to Cowan Bridge and Charlotte Brontë’s relationship with M. Héger – and reflect on how it changes their perspective of the memoir.

Lucy has just finished her PhD on female editing in the mid-Victorian period at The University of Manchester. She has published on the Brontës and Gaskell and is currently working on manuscript studies in the nineteenth-century more generally.

Tickets are just £6 and numbers are strictly limited to ensure we have a suitable number for an interactive workshop.
