A “Friends of Plymouth Grove” Event (Elizabeth Gaskell’s House)
Saturday 9 April, 2016, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
£8The Life Story of a Victorian Silk Dress: A Talk by Margo Singer followed by a CREAM TEA
At Elizabeth Gaskell’s House on Saturday 9th April 2-4pm
Margo will describe the social context of dress during the Victorian period looking at textiles and dress plus accessories such as bonnets and lace, which were worn by both middle class and working class women. We will hear quotations from Elizabeth Gaskell’s letters and novels, revealing her attitudes to dress and to sewing! We will be able to look at authentic examples of 19th century dress and textiles as well as contemporary reconstructions
This will be followed by A Cream Tea, with home-made scones and cakes- we’ll leave you to decide whether you have a Devon cream tea- cream first and jam on top, or a Cornish cream tea – jam first and cream on top! One thing for certain, there will be lots of lovely cakes of all kinds. If anyone would like to help by baking scones or cake, that would be great!
The cost is £8 and cheques should be made payable to MHBT and sent to Mrs Margo Singer
14 Silverdale Road, Chorlton, M 21 0SH
