Creative Writing Workshop: Cranford!

5 April, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

£25

Dust off your dialect and prepare to get creative in this fascinating writing workshop inspired by Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford and the upcoming Cranford Exhibition at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.

In this wonderful half-day writing and poetry workshop, you’ll join ballad singer Jennifer Reid in exploring the street literature available at the time in the city and the dialect used in the village.

From this exploration of the oral and print traditions of the area, you’ll write your own dialect pieces in response to Cranford, on the themes of local history, family memories and home life.

Jennifer Reid is a performer of 19th Century Industrial Revolution broadside ballads and Lancashire dialect work song. After volunteering at Chetham’s Library and the Working Class Movement Library, Jennifer completed an Advanced Diploma in Local History at Oxford University. Jennifer’s work now takes her to Bangladesh, where she is testing the idea that the Industrial Revolution never stopped, it just moved to Dhaka. In April 2018, Jennifer spoke at the first ethnomusicography conference on the Indian sub-continent about her research into Bangladeshi and Mancunian weaving songs. Jennifer’s work is preserved in the Doc Rowe archive and at the British Library and she sits on the executive committee of the Society for the Study of Labour History. You can see more of Jennifer’s work here: www.JenniferReid.weebly.com.
