Every year, on a Sunday close to what would have been Elizabeth Gaskell’s birthday, we lay flowers on her grave at Brook Street Chapel in Knutsford. We also lay flowers on the nearby grave of the Gaskell Society’s founder, the much-missed Joan Leach. We then go into the chapel for a special service. You are most welcome to join us.

This year, as one of the National Heritage Days coincides with our Gaskell Service, the Brook Street Chapel Committee thought it would be an ideal opportunity for more people to learn about Elizabeth Gaskell. The laying of flowers on the grave at 10.45am will be followed by the Gaskell Service, which will include Jessica Baldry, a young singer from the Hallé, who will sing a religious song and a musical song from her repertoire. The theme for the service is heritage and food to relate to the Heritage Days’ theme of Edible England. The Gaskell readings will reflect Gaskell’s comments on food through her letters and novels. After the service, the Chapel will be serving a ploughman’s lunch at a cost of £6. During the afternoon a brass band will play and Aya, the Chapel’s organist, will give short recitals and play popular songs about food. 

The Earl of Stamford Morris Dancers will give a display and owls from Lower Moss Wood Nature Reserve and Animal Hospital will be in attendance. There will also be stalls selling cakes, beer and wine, tea and coffee and (hopefully) cheese. There will also be children’s activities. The hope is that everyone will find something to enjoy. 

The Chapel hopes that Gaskell Society members will be able to support this celebration. Please note that the day is free for all to attend.
