2.15pm: Joanna Williams will be talking on The People’s Champion: Abel Heywood, Mayor of Manchester.

Joanna will explore Heywood’s origins, motives and aspirations, and his material and spiritual development. We will discover his main achievements – particularly as a political and social campaigner – and of course his role in the construction and inauguration of the Town Hall.

Joanna, a native of the Manchester area, studied history at the University of Manchester at undergraduate and post graduate level. After lecturing for the Department of Extra-Mural Studies, she taught history at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. Her fascination with the Nineteenth Century stemmed from her sixth form teaching, enabling her to achieve a lifelong ambition by publishing this, her first biography: Manchester’s Radical Mayor,  Abel Heywood
