We are pleased to welcome Members and Friends to our latest Study Day, to be held at the beautifully restored Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.
A delicious lunch is included in the fee of £30.
The programme for the day is as follows:
10.30 Welcome – Coffee/tea and Introduction to the Day
11.00 Dr Deborah Wynne – Chester University
Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cotton Novels
This talk will explore Gaskell’s engagement with the Cotton industry and the women workers. She will also discuss slavery in the USA, who picked the cotton , and Gaskell’s abolitionist stand
11.50 Questions and short break
12.00 Sarah Williamson- The Brontë Quilt
This talk will illustrate how Sarah was inspired to research and recreate a contemporary version of the Brontë Quilt, helped b her quilting friends.
12.50 Margo Singer – The Manchester Quilt
This quilt was made by volunteers at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, at their regular ” Sewing Bee” group.

14.00 Dr Brenda King: The Leek Embroidery Society
This talk will look at the exquisite embroidery produced by Elizabeth Wardle and the women of the he Leek Embroidery Society.They became internationally recognized for their work with the leading architects of the 19th century
