11.30 am: The Daphne Carrick Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Dr Katherine Skaris of Durham University who will be taking as her title The Unsung Heroes of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Fiction.
Elizabeth Gaskell’s earlier works primarily address nineteenth-century social and political issues and her efforts in social reform, especially in regards to women, is ever-present in all her novels. In this paper, Katherine will argue that in Mary Barton, North and South, Ruth, Wives and Daughters, and Sylvia’s Lovers, Gaskell challenges the ideology of femininity and patriarchal power through her heroines
Katherine completed her doctoral degree at Durham University, in January 2016. Her PhD thesis explores the portrayal of women’s labour in nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and British fiction.

2.15pm: Dr.Mary Hammond will be taking as her title French Novels, Lemons and Lumps of Sugar: picturing the travelling reader in 1850-1930.”
This talk examines some iconic images of Victorian women reading while travelling and explores them alongside the fascinating, frank and often funny testimony of some of the millions of real women who read while they travelled along nineteenth-century Britain’s roads and railways.
Mary Hammond is Professor of English and Book History at the University of Southampton and a specialist in the history of reading. She is the author of many books and articles on nineteenth-century literature and its readers, and the editor of the forthcoming multi-volume Edinburgh History of Reading: a World Survey from Antiquity to the Present.
