The Victorian Bedroom (online talk)

Wednesday 20 January, 2021, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

£5

The Victorian Bedroom: curtains, feathers, slops and bugs.

Join the Gaskell Society’s Anthony Burton, one of our most popular and engaging speakers. Anthony has been getting behind appearances to confront some of the problems of life in the Victorian bedroom.

Using Victorian household manuals, he tries to answer such questions as: What sorts of beds, and bathtubs were available? Would you stuff your mattress with straw, wool, horsehair, seaweed or hops? And tells of other strange dilemma faced by our Victorian forebears

Anthony’s talk will be followed by a second brief update on the progress made thus far on the project to restore a bedroom at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, to be given by Frank Galvin, Chair of Board of Trustees.  Frank’s talk will be accompanied by slides showing some of the acquisitions, many of which have been paid for by generous donation. As always, we are very grateful for all ongoing support of the House.

There will be a short interval between the talks and an opportunity for questions to both speakers
