SUMMARY:Richard Hooke and his Photo-Painted Portrait of William Gaskell
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Jevon Thistlewood of the Ashmolean Museum. Richard Hooke’s career as a portrait painter neatly overlaps the rapid rise and development of commercially available black and white photography. The term “Photo-Painting” refers to the technique of overpainting photographs\, usually in oil paint\, to create portraits. In the absence of colour photography\, portraits executed in oil paint over a monochrome photographic image were more extensive in the nineteenth century than is generally acknowledged today. This talk will examine Richard Hooke’s development as a portrait painter and his integral use of photography. His portrait of William Gaskell will be used as a case study to illustrate common tell-tale features found in his work. \nJevon Thistlewood is the Conservator of Paintings at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology\, University of Oxford\, and an Accredited Member of the Institute of Conservation (ICON). \nDoors open from 12.45 and you are welcome bring a packed lunch before the talk. Tea/coffee and refreshments will be provided after the talk  – which starts at 2.00 – and the event will finish at around 4.00 pm \nEntry is £6 (cash only\, please). Booking is not necessary\, although it would help our planning if you could let us know that you hope to come.  Contact Jenny Keaveney  07791 309784 \n

SUMMARY:Mary Sidney Herbert and Elizabeth Gaskell: networks across time and place
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Dr Julia Allen\nThese two women were regarded as being outstanding authors during the times in which they lived. Mary Sidney Herbert (1561-1621) is mainly associated with her accomplished poetic translations of the Psalms. Amongst her other publications is a play based on the Antony and Cleopatra story\, before Shakespeare wrote his version. Elizabeth Gaskell’s work does not need an introduction. \nHow are these two women linked across time and place? Come to the talk and find out! \nDr Julia Allen’s interest in Gaskell began while she was studying for a master’s degree in history\, which included a study of James Kay Shuttleworth\, at Manchester University. However\, other worlds beckoned and\, while living and working in Zambia during the 1980s\, Julia began research for her PhD\, a study of cultural history in Central Africa. She has published widely in that field in history and theological journals. \nJulia is a member of the London and South-east branch of the Gaskell Society and worked for the Open University for many years\, teaching in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Since retirement she has lectured regularly for a Wiltshire based Literary Society. In 2022 she co-authored a local history book: Mary Sidney Herbert: an Elizabethan Writer and her World. \nThe meeting will take place at Francis Holland School\, 39 Graham Terrace\, London SW1W 8JF. Doors open at 12.45 – do bring a packed lunch to eat before the talk starts at 2.00 pm. Tea and coffee will be available afterwards and contributions of cake\, etc\, to go with these are very welcome! \nAll are welcome\, both members and non-members – no need to book. We ask for a £6 donation to cover our expenses.

SUMMARY:Trailblazer: the Life and Work of Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon was one of the most intriguing of Victorian heroines: unconventional\, illegitimate\, yet at the centre of a luminous circle of influential Victorians\, including Elizabeth Gaskell\, George Eliot\, Florence Nightingale\, the Rossettis and Gertrude Jekyll. She was someone who opened many of the doors we walk through today with barely a backward glance: Barbara founded the first university college for women; the first women’s suffrage society\, and the campaign to allow women to keep their own property after marriage. Look in the engine-room of every aspect of social change in Victorian Britain\, and you’ll find Barbara. Loving and beloved\, Barbara was inspiring and remarkably modern: a role model for our times – and huge fun. \nJane Robinson is an acclaimed social historian\, focusing on women pioneers. She has written thirteen major books\, including Hearts and Minds\, looking at the hidden history of the fight for the vote; Bluestockings\, the story of the first women to access higher education in Britain\, and biographies of Mary Seacole and Josephine Butler. Jane is a Fellow of both the Royal Historical and Royal Geographical Societies\, a Hawthornden Fellow\, a writing mentor\, and a Senior Associate of Somerville College. \nAll are welcome\, both members and non-members. We ask for a £6 donation to cover our expenses.

SUMMARY:London & SE Meeting: Conjuring in Cranford
DESCRIPTION:Who were the potential models for Signor Brunoni? Could Dickens (who performed as “The Unparalleled Necromancer Rhia Rhama Rhoos”) have been one of them? What kind of text did Miss Pole use to research how the magic tricks are done? \nChristopher Pittard’s forthcoming book\, Literary Illusions\, explores the dialogue between Victorian literature and one of the nineteenth century’s most popular modes of performance: conjuring. \nChristopher is Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Portsmouth. His main research focus is on the popular culture of the nineteenth century\, especially the emergence of popular genres in the Victorian fin de siecle and detective fiction in particular. \nAll are welcome\, both members and non-members. SUMMARY:Elizabeth Gaskell\, the Portico Library and Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:The Gaskells’ relationship with the Portico Library is well-documented. A bust of William Gaskell sits in the Library\, honouring his tenure as the Chairman – the longest running Chairman in the Library’s history. A handful of articles have explored William and Elizabeth’s relationship to the library\, but in this early stage\, we have only just begun to scratch the surface. What can the Gaskell Borrowing Logs tell us about Elizabeth Gaskell’s reading habits and trends? Do the borrowed books go beyond just pleasure reading and into research for her own writing? What connections might we be able to draw between books borrowed and the works that Gaskell was working on at the time? In this talk\, Emma Probett will uncover unexplored connections between Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell alongside the wider history of the “novel of manners” genre\, which makes a frequent and significant appearance in the records. \nDr Emma Probett is a writer\, researcher and podcaster. She has a PhD in Victorian Studies from the University of Leicester on Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell’s 19th-century Novels of Manners: Narrative Experiments and Developments with the Community Setting and is currently writing a book on this theme. \nPrice: £6.00\, payable in cash on the day \nDoors open from 12.45 and you are welcome to join us for lunch (not provided – bring a packed lunch) before the talk. \nTea/coffee and refreshments will be provided after the talk and the event will finish at around 4.00 pm \nBooking is not necessary\, although it would help our planning if you could let us know that you hope to come. \nContact Jenny Keaveney  07791 309784

SUMMARY:Can we Devise a Gaskell Brand? - with Anthony Burton
DESCRIPTION:As anyone who has attended Gaskell Society conferences\, or joined any of the Gaskell House’s online events\, will know\, Anthony has a vast and wide-ranging amount of knowledge about Elizabeth Gaskell\, her life\, times and contemporaries. He will use Gaskell\, Dickens\, Austen and the Brontës to look at how writers have been promoted (or promoted themselves) during their lifetimes and beyond. As well as the texts themselves\, film and TV adaptations\, literary societies\, and places associated with the authors all form part of their “brand”. Can we devise a Gaskell ‘brand’ which could compete in the literary heritage industry with those of Austen\, the Brontës and Dickens? \nThe meeting will take place at Francis Holland School\, 39 Graham Terrace\, London SW1W 8JF. Doors open at 12.45 – do bring a packed lunch to eat before the talk starts at 2.00 pm. Tea and coffee will be available afterwards and contributions of cake\, etc\, to go with these are very welcome! \nAll are welcome\, both members and non-members. We ask for a £5 donation to cover our expenses.

SUMMARY:Mrs Gaskell's Personal Pantheon - with Bob Gamble
DESCRIPTION:Bob’s book of this title appeared in August 2020 and highlights connections between Unitarian communities across England by following the life and times of Elizabeth Gaskell’s dear friend\, Janetta Bishop Mitchell. Janetta’s closeness to the Reverend William Turner of Newcastle upon Tyne emphasises why a correct identification of ‘Miss Mitchell’ is significant to Gaskell biography. This talk has been planned for a long time and had to be cancelled previously due to the pandemic so we are very pleased to be able to hear it at last. \nPlease note that this meeting takes place on the THIRD Saturday\, rather than our usual second Saturday!
