SUMMARY:Online Talk: Margaret Hale - North and South
DESCRIPTION:Our passion for North and South continues as we take a closer look at lead character Margaret Hale. Our heroine is famous for her growing love affair with mill-owner John Thornton (played so well by Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage in the 2004 BBC TV adaptation) and their relationship is at the heart of both the novel and series. However Margaret is an independent woman and complex character\, whose assumptions about gritty industrial North are constantly challenged by the people she meets in Milton. Beyond the love story\, what is it that is so compelling about Margaret? Is she a snobby southerner? How does she change through the course of the story? And how might she inspire us today? Join journalist and fan-fiction writer Caroline Malcolm-Boulton for all the answers and more. \nSimilar to last year’s talk on John Thornton\, Caroline would like to invite fans of North and South to get in touch prior to the event to briefly discuss their thoughts on Margaret Hale so that she can better understand our collective relationship with the literary heroine as contemporary readers and viewers. Caroline can be contacted here.

SUMMARY:Online Talk: North and South Fan Fiction - A Writing Passion
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South continues to be beloved by fans around the world. Many who admire the novel or the BBC series\, have been inspired to contribute their own twist to this iconic love story set against the backdrop of industrial England. Through the use of retellings and continuations\, Gaskell fans have developed a passion for writing and reading fan fiction\, allowing us to revel in the life and love of John Thornton and Margaret Hale in creative new ways. \nBut what is fanfic? What motivates someone to write and read it? How can our contemporary interpretations shape our understanding and appreciation of North and South today? And why has the genre experienced a revival since the start of the pandemic? \nFanfic author and journalist Caroline Malcolm-Boulton interviews two fan fiction writers to look at re-inventing classic novels for a new audience\, discovering how\, when and why these writers took up the pen in the name of Gaskell\, and how they encourage others to give it a go. So\, whether you are fan fiction reader or writer\, new to the genre\, or an experienced author\, join us for a celebration of fanfic and North and South.
