Domestic Mental Cruelty in Elizabeth Gaskell’s Works

Saturday 20 May, 2023, 12:45 pm - 4:00 pm BST

A talk by Kathleen Gentle

Kathleen Gentle, a postgraduate researcher at Anglia Ruskin University, examines  the depiction of psychological abuse in familial and spousal relationships and focusing on Sylvia’s Lovers and the short stories “Morton Hall” and “The Grey Woman”.

We are very grateful to Kathleen for stepping in at short notice to replace our previously advertised speaker, Amanda Ford, who is now no longer able to attend.

She is one of the organisers of the forthcoming Elizabeth Gaskell Conference in June.

The meeting will take place at Francis Holland School, 39 Graham Terrace, London SW1W 8JF. Doors open at 12.45 – do bring a packed lunch to eat before the talk starts at 2.00 pm. Tea and coffee will be available afterwards and contributions of cake, etc, to go with these are very welcome!

All are welcome, both members and non-members. We ask for a £5 donation to cover our expenses.
