This talk will explore what the furniture in North and South tells us about the social world Gaskell inhabits.
Dr Clara Dawson reflects on whether furniture provides us with an alternative narrative to the romance plot and the depiction of north and south, and how our reading of the novel changes if we trace the narrative of objects and things.
Doors open at 1pm – the chapel will be selling tea and coffee and you are most welcome to bring a packed lunch!
The talks begin at 1.30pm.
All are welcome – both members and non-members.
Your ticket gives entry to the Manchester meeting and online access to a recording. If you book via Ticketsource, we’ll email the video link to you after the event.
