Manchester Meeting – Sustainability and Mrs Gaskell’s life and works

Sustainability has become almost a popular term in recent years. It can have many meanings, not just those relating to the environment and it provides an interesting lens through which to refract and reflect upon the life of Mrs Gaskell and her works. Thus, for example, in Wives and Daughters, the narrator says “In his father’s eyes, Osborne was the representative of the ancient house of Hamley, the future owner of the land which had been theirs for a thousand years”. Mrs Gaskell challenges such shibboleths of tradition and the talk will explore this in the context of sustainability.

Everyone is most welcome to come along, members and non-members alike. Doors open at 1pm (feel free to bring a packed lunch) and the talk will begin at 1.30pm.
