Online Talk: Margaret Hale – North and South

Wednesday 6 September, 2023, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm BST

£5

Our passion for North and South continues as we take a closer look at lead character Margaret Hale. Our heroine is famous for her growing love affair with mill-owner John Thornton (played so well by Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage in the 2004 BBC TV adaptation) and their relationship is at the heart of both the novel and series. However Margaret is an independent woman and complex character, whose assumptions about gritty industrial North are constantly challenged by the people she meets in Milton. Beyond the love story, what is it that is so compelling about Margaret? Is she a snobby southerner? How does she change through the course of the story? And how might she inspire us today? Join journalist and fan-fiction writer Caroline Malcolm-Boulton for all the answers and more.

Similar to last year’s talk on John Thornton, Caroline would like to invite fans of North and South to get in touch prior to the event to briefly discuss their thoughts on Margaret Hale so that she can better understand our collective relationship with the literary heroine as contemporary readers and viewers. Caroline can be contacted here.
