We are thrilled that Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is celebrating North and South during 2022, with a special season of events and talks!
The BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic novel was a surprise instant hit with television audiences when it aired in 2004. A key part of its appeal was the performance of the two leads, Richard Armitage as smouldering mill owner John Thornton and Daniela Denby-Ashe as heroine Margaret Hale. The Gaskell Society Chair, Libby Tempest explores why we all love this adaptation. She compares it with the original novel before asking the question: what effect did its success have on Elizabeth Gaskell’s reputation?
Read Libby’s blog post on the subject.
Tickets £4
The talk will be approx 45 mins long, with time for a short question session afterwards.
