The Gaskell Society

Celebrating the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell

We publish short works about Elizabeth Gaskell now and then, all of which are available through our online shop

The latest of these is Elizabeth Gaskell: Manchester’s Versatile Storyteller, written by Anthony Burton. Anthony has been looking at the different facets of Gaskell’s storytelling and presents a brief overview on Manchester and the North, Manchester Stories, Village Tales, the Industrial Novel, the Social Problem Novel, Family Sagas, Historical Fiction and finally, Crime and Ghost Stories. There are works by Elizabeth Gaskell that could be said to represent all of these genres, some more than one.

We do normally charge a small amount for our publications, but the good news is that this one is free!  Use the window below to read the document.

We hope you’ll enjoy this overview of the works of this most versatile of storytellers.
