Celebrating the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell

We’re thrilled to learn that Elizabeth Gaskell is inspiring a new generation of readers and writers!

Now in their sixth year, the prestigious Portico Sadie Massey Awards, organised by The Portico Library in Manchester, continue to nurture young, writing talent across the North of England with two competitions.

In this year’s short story category, the judges are asking: What’s your story?

They’ve highlighted four people who lived in the North, achieved great things and had interesting lives – and one of those selected is Elizabeth Gaskell!  The project is all about young people’s point of view, their environment and an opportunity to write, using their own unique voices.

As well as a short story, young people can submit a book review – fact, fiction, or poetry – of any book that has inspired them in 2020.

Both competitions are open to 7–16 year-olds and entry is free. Prizes include writing mentorships, book bundles and goodie-filled Portico Library gift bags!

Further information, writing tips, links and news from past winners, along with last year’s winning entries, can be found at theportico.org.uk/portico-sadie-massey-awards.

The closing date is midnight, Friday, 26th March 2021.
