Online Talk: North and South – An Introduction

Wednesday 26 January, 2022, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm GMT

£4

We are thrilled that Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is celebrating North and South during 2022, with a special season of events and talks!

The season opener is the Gaskell Society’s Elizabeth Williams, with an introduction to this best-known and most-loved of Gaskell’s novels. One of the first industrial novels to describe class strife, it follows heroine Margaret Hale as she moves from the rural south to the manufacturing north and her conflicted relationship with mill owner John Thornton. Find out more about the context in which the book was written, including industrial Manchester and Elizabeth’s personal life, and arguments with her editor, Charles Dickens.

Tickets £4

The talk will be approx 45 mins long, with time for a short question session afterwards.
